Mauritania, Israel preparing to resume diplomatic ties- Semafor – The North Africa Post

Mauritania is preparing to reestablish diplomatic relations with Israel, according to a report by news platform Semafor, signaling a major diplomatic shift in North Africa and the broader Middle East.

The announcement is expected to be made during a high-level summit hosted at the White House, part of a renewed US effort to expand normalization agreements between Israel and African nations.

Mauritania, a Muslim country and Arab League member, previously cut ties with Israel in 2010 following the Gaza conflict.

The potential restoration of relations would mark a significant step in the ongoing expansion of the Abraham Accords that began in 2020 and saw many Arab countries normalize ties between Israel.

According to Semafor, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the sidelines of a US Africa mini-summit. The event, organized by U.S. President Donald Trump, includes leaders from Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, and Senegal, and is aimed at shifting US-Africa relations toward trade and investment.
