Morocco’s national football team has climbed to seventh place in the latest FIFA World Ranking released on Thursday, achieving the highest position in its history since the men’s world ranking system was introduced in 1993.
The Atlas Lions gained one spot after defeating Madagascar and drawing a friendly match against Norway, bringing their total to 1,755.10 points.
In its official statement, FIFA highlighted Morocco’s continued rise on the international stage, noting that the team surpassed the Netherlands, which dropped to eighth place.
Just hours before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Morocco sits seventh in the global rankings, directly behind Brazil, which occupies sixth place with 1,765.86 points.
At the top of the rankings, Argentina regained first place following recent victories, while Spain remained second and France slipped to third. England and Portugal retained fourth and fifth places respectively.
Morocco also maintained its position as the highest-ranked African nation, ahead of Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria and Egypt.
FIFA further indicated that the world ranking system may be used as a tie-breaking criterion during the 2026 World Cup in specific scenarios involving teams level on points at the end of the group stage.
