A 20-year-old woman died on Friday evening after drowning in the reservoir of a small dam in the Gouart area of Tangier, in a tragic incident that has once again highlighted the risks associated with swimming in bodies of water that are not designated for recreational use.
According to the available information, the victim had been swimming with a group of people inside the dam reservoir when she was swept by the current toward a deep area. While those accompanying her managed to reach safety, people at the scene were unable to intervene and rescue her because of the depth of the water and the difficulty of reaching the area where she disappeared.
After being alerted, Civil Protection teams, local authorities and security services went to the scene and launched search and combing operations. The efforts eventually led to the recovery of the young woman’s body, which was subsequently transferred to the morgue.
Meanwhile, the competent authorities opened an investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the precise causes and details of the drowning.
The tragedy has renewed warnings about the dangers of swimming in small dam reservoirs, which attract some young people during the summer despite lacking adequate safety conditions. Varying water depths and sudden underwater slopes can make rescue operations particularly difficult, highlighting the need to strengthen public awareness campaigns and monitoring measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.
