Ferry operator GNV, part of the MSC Group, has announced the deployment of two next-generation vessels to serve Morocco as part of preparations for Operation Marhaba 2026.
The ships GNV Aurora and GNV Virgo will enter service on June 1 and July 1, respectively. Both will operate on the Genoa–Barcelona–Tanger Med route, one of the main maritime corridors linking Europe and Morocco.
A step forward in sustainability
The two vessels are among the most advanced in GNV’s fleet and are powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), enabling a reduction in CO₂ emissions of up to 50% compared to conventional ships.
In addition, GNV Aurora is equipped with cold ironing technology, allowing it to connect to shore-side electricity while docked and shut down its engines, eliminating emissions in port areas and improving air quality.
Strengthening Tanger Med’s role as a logistics hub
The launch of these operations is the result of close cooperation between GNV, Moroccan authorities, and the management of Tanger Med port, highlighting its growing importance as a key logistics hub in the Mediterranean.
This milestone also reflects the strength of the long-standing partnership between GNV and Morocco, built over more than 15 years through sustained institutional and technical collaboration.
Morocco at the core of GNV’s strategy
According to CEO Matteo Catani, Morocco is a long-term strategic partner for the company. The deployment of these new vessels for Operation Marhaba underscores GNV’s commitment to improving service quality for Moroccans living abroad.
As part of this expansion, Carole Montarsolo has been appointed Managing Director of GNV Morocco, while Mohammed Kabbaj will continue to play a key role in maintaining institutional and commercial relations.
High technical performance
GNV Aurora has a gross tonnage of حوالي 53,000 tons, a length of 218 meters, and a capacity exceeding 1,700 passengers across 426 cabins, along with significant freight capacity. GNV Virgo offers similar technical specifications and service standards.
Boosting connectivity and economic development
The introduction of these vessels aligns with Morocco’s broader infrastructure and logistics development strategy, particularly in light of preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
GNV is positioning itself as a key player in maritime connectivity between Europe and Morocco, supporting both passenger mobility and economic exchange.
The company also announced that the official christening ceremony of GNV Aurora will take place in Tangier on June 1, in the presence of authorities and partners—an event symbolizing the deepening ties between GNV and the Kingdom.
