Rabat – King Mohammed VI will preside today over a religious ceremony marking the 27th anniversary of the passing of the late King Hassan II, the Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol and Chancellery announced in a statement.

The ceremony will take place at the Mausoleum of Mohammed V in Rabat and will be broadcast live on national radio and television starting at 6 p.m.

King Hassan II, remembered as the “Great Late King” of Morocco, ruled the country from 1961 until his death in 1999.

He was known for his strong leadership and his efforts to modernize Morocco while preserving its traditions. The country navigated significant political and social changes under his reign, including constitutional reforms and economic development programs.

After King Hassan II’s passing on July 23, 1999, his son, King Mohammed VI, ascended to the throne. In his over 25-year reign, King Mohammed VI has introduced wide-ranging political, social, and economic reforms while continuing to uphold the country’s traditions and religious values.

The late King Hassan II also played a prominent role in regional and international diplomacy, particularly in advancing the Palestinian cause and strengthening Morocco’s ties with Africa and the wider Arab world.

His reign was marked by both challenges and achievements, and his legacy continues to shape Morocco’s political and cultural life today.

Each year, Moroccans commemorate his passing with prayers and religious ceremonies to honor his memory and the role he played in shaping modern Morocco.

Today’s memorial ceremony comes at a time when Morocco is witnessing ongoing youth-led protests, known as the Gen Z movement, calling for improvements in education, healthcare, and social services.
