Rabat – Morocco launched today the “Digital Hub for Sustainable Development” in New York to accelerate digital transformation across Africa and the Arab world.
The launch took place during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, reflecting Morocco’s vision under King Mohammed VI to become a regional leader in digital innovation.
The initiative was led by Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The launch ceremony was attended by Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform Amal Falah Sghrouchni, and Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Omar Hilal.
Akhannouch spoke about the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) as a global priority, stating that Morocco is committed to using technology to support inclusive and sustainable human development.
Minister Sghrouchni stated that the hub reflects Morocco’s determination to make technology a driver of fairness, innovation, and opportunity, both nationally and across Africa and the Arab region.
The hub will focus on using AI in key sectors, including health, education, climate resilience, and governance. It will also support women and youth to become leaders in digital transformation.
The initiative aims to address common challenges in African and Arab countries, such as fragmented systems, lack of digital skills, high costs, and insufficient public policy coordination, by offering a regional platform for shared innovation and human-centered solutions.
UNDP Acting Director Haoliang Shu commended the partnership, saying the hub will provide Arab and African countries with a unique space to develop and implement digital solutions that benefit both people and the planet.
Participants at the event also discussed creating a parallel multilateral platform to unite standards, develop skills, and promote the responsible use of AI in support of sustainable development.
Through this initiative, Morocco demonstrates its leadership in South-South cooperation on digital transformation, aligning with UN strategies and the digital agendas of the African Union and the Arab League.
