Morocco’s agency for nuclear, radiological safety and security (AMSSNuR) and U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) have agreed to enhance cooperation in nuclear security, said Thursday the U.S. embassy in a post on its X account.
The two parties pledged to foster cooperation in training and capacity building for safe handling of radioactive materials, emergency, and preparedness for nuclear incident response. They also agreed to enhance their collaboration in innovation and advanced detection technologies, peaceful nuclear applications.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has already awarded Morocco a top safety rating, acknowledging that all nuclear substances on its soil are used solely for peaceful purposes.
This confirms the country’s compliance with global nuclear non-proliferation agreements and adherence to highest safety standards. Rabat is committed to international nuclear transparency and to cooperating with IAEA on peaceful use of nuclear science and technology.
In 2024, Morocco and the International Atomic Energy Agency signed an agreement on capacity building in radiological safety, transport safety, radioactive waste safety and nuclear security.
The North African Kingdom is also cooperating with the United States against nuclear proliferation and terrorism in North Africa, a region vulnerable to illicit trafficking and extremism.
NNSA’s global mission includes securing nuclear materials worldwide and its cooperation with AMSSNuR builds on long-standing US-Morocco strategic partnership. Morocco is a major non-NATO ally of the United States.
Moroccan-American nuclear cooperation has been growing, especially as the Kingdom advances its civilian nuclear ambitions for sustainable development amid water and energy challenges.
