Rabat – Morocco’s national futsal team lost 2-0 to Argentina on Sunday in their second and final game of the FIFA Triangular International Tournament held in Buenos Aires.
The match was tense and marked by controversial refereeing decisions that frustrated the Atlas Lions.
Playing in front of a large crowd of passionate Argentine fans, with only a small group of Moroccan supporters in the stands, the Moroccan side showed strong skills and tactical discipline.
They defended well and tried to surprise Argentina with quick counterattacks, managing to create some scoring chances.
Despite their efforts, Morocco could not find the net. The first Argentine goal came during a heated moment when players and staff protested referee decisions. All five referees were Argentinians, which raised questions among Moroccan fans as to fairness of the calls.
Tensions rose further when Morocco’s coach, Hicham Dguig, was shown a red card and expelled from the game during the first half after repeatedly protesting referee decisions. In the second half, Argentina scored again from a penalty after Morocco committed five fouls.
Coach Dguig said after the game that the refereeing mistakes clearly affected the flow of the match and broke his team’s momentum.
The defeat came just a day after Morocco’s convincing 5-3 win over Chile. With this result, Argentina won the three-team tournament with two victories, while Morocco finished second ahead of Chile.
This international tournament served as key preparation for the Atlas Lions ahead of upcoming competitions where they are aiming to forge ahead strongly.
