Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman described Morocco as the strongest team his side faced during the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the Dutch were eliminated on penalties in the Round of 32.
Speaking after the match, Koeman said his team adopted a more defensive tactical approach in an effort to contain Morocco’s strengths but admitted that the Netherlands lacked attacking efficiency throughout the game.
He stated that Morocco’s equalizing goal changed the momentum of the match, which eventually went to extra time before being decided by a penalty shootout.
Koeman defended his decision to play with five defenders, stressing that the tactical plan was based on a detailed analysis of Morocco rather than fear of the opponent, adding that he would make the same decision again under similar circumstances.
The Dutch coach also confirmed that he is not considering resigning at this stage, although he intends to assess the team’s overall performance after the tournament.
Meanwhile, former Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimović criticized Koeman’s tactical approach, saying the Netherlands failed to play with the attacking identity traditionally associated with Dutch football.
