Consumer groups call for urgent action as red meat prices remain high in Morocco

    ayaJuly 28, 2026

The continued rise in red meat prices in Morocco has renewed calls for stronger market regulation and measures aimed at protecting consumers’ purchasing power, as many households continue to feel the impact of higher food costs.

In this context, Mohamed Kimawi, President of the Moroccan Union of Consumer Protection Associations, said that several institutions responsible for overseeing the sector have not, in his view, succeeded in curbing the sustained increase in meat prices despite repeated discussions on the issue.

According to Kimawi, the situation reflects the need for more effective action to combat speculation and improve market regulation. He noted that the union had previously proposed temporary measures, including a temporary price cap, until market conditions become more stable.

He also called for a stronger role for the country’s relevant institutions, including the Competition Council, to improve market oversight and ensure greater protection for consumers.

Kimawi further urged consumer protection organizations to strengthen coordination and work collectively to defend citizens’ purchasing power, stressing that closer cooperation between public authorities, economic stakeholders and civil society is essential to restoring market stability and consumer confidence.
