Egypt demands UN Security Council reform, calls for end to exclusive veto powers – The North Africa Post

Egypt has called for sweeping reforms to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), arguing that the veto system has become untenable in today’s fractured world.

The call was launched by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in his address at the Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia on Tuesday, September 3.

Abdelatty said the council must either extend veto privileges to new permanent members or abolish them entirely. He stressed that Arab, African, and Islamic States deserve genuine representation, warning that global trust in multilateralism and international law is eroding due to double standards in the handling of conflicts.

He compared in this context the strong international response to the war in Ukraine with what he described as the world’s silence over the crisis in Gaza, calling the disparity a “shame on humanity.” He also highlighted the unprecedented pressures facing Egypt on multiple fronts and linked the erosion of trust to inequities in global governance.

Beyond the UNSC, he called for reforms to the World Bank and the IMF to make them more democratic, insisting that without such changes, efforts to revive multilateralism and restore global leadership will falter.
