Spain’s Supreme Court has awarded financial compensation to a Moroccan citizen following a judicial review that resulted in the annulment of a previous conviction and his formal acquittal.
According to Spanish media reports, the case dates back to 1992, when the individual was convicted in a criminal case. Subsequent reviews of the file reportedly included scientific evidence that led to the reversal of the earlier ruling and the recognition of his innocence.
The Supreme Court ordered compensation amounting to €2.5 million, taking into account the period during which the Moroccan citizen was deprived of his liberty before the final judicial decision was issued.
Available reports indicate that the defense team had requested a higher amount in compensation, but the court ultimately determined the final figure after examining the circumstances and details of the case.
The case attracted significant media attention in Spain due to its lengthy judicial history and the developments that eventually led to the individual’s acquittal and the granting of financial compensation by the country’s highest court.
