Moroccan Photographer Sentenced to 20 Years on Appeal

Rabat – Salim Berrada, known in the media as “Tinder Rapist”, received 20 years in prison on an appeal trial on Thursday in France.

The Creteil court sentenced Berrada to the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on Thursday, finding him guilty of raping and sexually assaulting 17 women he met through social networks and dating apps.

The defendant lured victims to his apartment, arranging supposed photo sessions. He was convicted of 13 rapes and four sexual assaults committed between 2014 and 2016.

Presiding judge Bertrand Grain said the jury was convinced of the victims’ drug-induced submission or their state of shock, emphasizing the extreme seriousness of the crimes and their serial nature over a two-year period, AFP reported.

He also described Berrada as a man with a “disturbing personality” who used a “systematic method to lure young women to his home.

The judge also cited victims’ “lasting and severe trauma.”

Berrada gave his parole during Thursday’s trial, claiming he “mixed photography, alcohol, and sex, thinking that was seduction. I almost industrialized it.”

He also said he “apologized to all the people I hurt.”

In an initial trial in March, a court in Paris found him guilty of 12 rapes and three sexual assaults, although the number rose when the court acquitted him on two other charges.

The court first sentenced Berrada to 18 years in prison and ordered an obligation to leave the country.
