Morocco’s U20 side booked their place in the World Cup round of 16 in Chile with a 2-1 win over Brazil in their second group game.
The first goal came in the 60th minute when Othmane Maamma volleyed home a precise cross from Gessime Yassine. Yassine then turned provider again, sliding a perfect through ball to Yassir Zabiri, who struck home after a slight deflection to make it 2-0. Brazil pulled one back in the 90th minute through Iago Teodoro from a penalty, but Morocco held on.
Coach Mohamed Wahbi’s side had defended well throughout the first half, with goalkeeper Yanis Benchawch making three crucial saves. A potential Brazilian penalty in the 33rd minute was overturned via VAR for simulation.
Morocco will face Mexico in their final group game on Saturday, October 4th, at 21:00 GMT+1.
Spain held 2-2 by Mexico
In another group action, Spain’s U20 campaign continued to struggle as they drew 2-2 with Mexico. Gilberto Mora opened the scoring for Mexico in the 32nd minute, with Pablo Garcia equalising for Spain ten minutes later. Iker Bravo put Spain ahead from the spot in the 80th minute, only for Mora to score again seven minutes later to secure the draw.
After two games, Spain have just one point, sitting at the bottom of Group C, while Mexico have two points in second place. Morocco top the group with six points, with Brazil third on one.
