Mali’s Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga publicly accused Algeria of supporting and exporting terrorism during his address to the 80th United Nations General Assembly, drawing sharp international attention to Algeria’s hostile acts towards its neighbors.
Addressing world leaders, Maïga denounced Algeria as a “champion of the promotion of terrorism and an exporter of terrorism,” saying that the country has actively undermined Mali’s sovereignty and regional stability.
The Prime Minister cited multiple incidents to support his claims, including the destruction of a Malian military drone on April 1, 2025, which Mali insists occurred within its own territory.
Maïga challenged Algeria’s claim that the drone had violated its airspace, pointing out that debris were found 22 kilometers inside Mali’s borders.
He further accused Algerian forces of providing safe haven to terrorist groups operating in the Sahel, claiming that attacks on Malian forces were launched from Algerian soil.
“Algeria once claimed to be a champion in the fight against terrorism, but today it has become a promoter and exporter of it,” Maïga said.
The speech also addressed Algeria’s refusal to cooperate with the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where Mali filed a formal complaint on September 4 over the drone incident.
Maïga criticized Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf for publicly denying the existence of the complaint, accusing him of misleading the international community. “The Algerian junta fears being exposed as an aggressor and supporter of international terrorism,” Maïga declared.
In a pointed conclusion, Maïga issued a direct appeal to Algeria: “We call on the Algerian junta to stop supporting international terrorism and to engage constructively in promoting peace and security, in full respect of state sovereignty.”
