Morocco positioned to supply half of European Union’s electricity needs – The North Africa Post

Morocco possesses competitive renewable energy potential sufficient to provide 50% of European Union electricity consumption, Industry and Commerce Minister Ryad Mezzour said in an interview with Italian La Verità publication. The kingdom’s solar and wind energy capabilities, including onshore and offshore resources, can mobilize approximately 1,600-1,700 TWh from Europe’s total 3,000 TWh consumption at competitive prices, he explained.

Mezzour highlighted Morocco’s hydrogen development “Morocco Offer” initiative, which has received 40 global investment proposals. International investors are actively seeking optimal locations with maximum solar and wind resources for immediate reservation pending project implementation, demonstrating significant international confidence in Morocco’s renewable energy sector.

The minister emphasized that Morocco’s qualified renewable energy projects enable the kingdom to address water challenges comprehensively. Current water system development encompasses storage, inter-basin transfer, production, drying, and water reuse technologies, targeting 100% permanent potable water supply and 80% agricultural water requirements by 2028-2030, independent of precipitation patterns.

Morocco’s industrial production advantages stem from renewable energy access cheaper than fossil fuels, despite lacking oil and gas resources. This positioning establishes Morocco among few countries globally benefiting from renewable energy cost advantages, enabling rapid industrial transition to renewable energy production systems.

The minister promoted the “Made in Morocco” label within global economic frameworks, emphasizing economic openness and new market access importance for Moroccan producers reaching broader clientele. Competitive production foundations require proportional logistics capabilities, as logistics represent 20-25% of production costs, necessitating ultra-competitive internal and international connection systems.

Morocco’s renewable energy strategy positions the kingdom as a critical European energy partner while supporting domestic industrial transformation and water security initiatives through sustainable energy solutions.
