Algeria’s political and security establishment is reeling from the reported escape of Nacer El Djinn, the former head of the country’s internal intelligence agency (DGSI), amid escalating internal rivalries and a broader crisis of governance.
El Djinn, dismissed in May, is believed to have fled the country aboard a clandestine patera bound for Spain, accompanied by several loyal officers. Though unconfirmed, multiple sources suggest he may already be in a safe location abroad. His disappearance has triggered a massive security lockdown in Algiers, with checkpoints, border reinforcements, and a sweeping manhunt underway.
The fugitive general, who played a central role in Algeria’s intelligence operations since the 1990s, is said to possess sensitive information that could compromise senior figures in the regime, including Army Chief of Staff General Saïd Chengriha.
Analysts warn that El Djinn’s potential disclosures could destabilize the already fragile power balance within Algeria’s ruling elite.
El Djinn’s escape comes amid a period of intense infighting within Algeria’s intelligence services. His successor, General Abdelkader Aït Ouarabi was appointed in May following the abrupt dismissal of General Abdelkader Haddad, who had served just one year.
The reshuffle reflects deeper tensions within the security establishment, which has seen over twenty leadership changes in five years.
The intelligence services are reportedly divided along factional lines, with rival clans vying for influence. Recent appointments, including the replacement of key defense ministry figures and the installation of academic advisors, suggest an effort to recalibrate strategy amid growing dysfunction.
As Algeria grapples with economic hardship, regional instability, and rising public discontent, the regime’s internal fractures are becoming increasingly visible.
