Morocco is taking part in the 66th edition of UNITAS, the world’s longest-running multinational naval exercise, hosted this year by the United States.
The drills, which run from September 15 to October 6, are being held across several strategic locations on the U.S. East Coast, including Mayport (Florida), Norfolk (Virginia), and Camp Lejeune (North Carolina), the US navy said.
The exercise brings together 25 allied and partner nations, mobilizing over 8,000 military personnel, dozens of warships, submarines, and aircraft.
UNITAS 2025 focuses on enhancing interoperability, joint operational readiness, and maritime security cooperation through a wide range of scenarios, including amphibious operations, live-fire exercises, cyber defense, search and rescue missions, and the deployment of hybrid and autonomous systems.
Morocco stands out as the only Arab and African nation participating in this year’s edition, underscoring its growing role in international security and its commitment to modernizing its naval capabilities.
The country’s involvement reflects a strategic alignment with global defense partners and a desire to strengthen its presence in multilateral military frameworks.
This year’s UNITAS also marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Navy, adding historical significance to the event.
Rear Admiral Carlos Sardiello, one of the senior commanders overseeing the exercise, emphasized that UNITAS is not only a tactical training opportunity but also a platform for building trust and unity among nations facing shared maritime challenges.
