Rabat – Moroccan international footballer Sofiane Boufal has dismissed false rumors claiming the death of his mother, calling for respect for his family’s privacy.
The Saint-Gilloise midfielder addressed the matter directly through Instagram Stories late Wednesday, following a wave of speculation on social media.
“Rumors about my mother’s death are completely baseless. My mother is fine, and we thank you for respecting our privacy. Please do not share this false information,” Boufal wrote.
The unverified claims had alleged that Boufal’s mother had passed away in Qatar after battling illness. Within hours of their circulation, the Atlas Lion moved to set the record straight.
Boufal’s siblings also intervened to deny the reports, sharing a short message on Instagram that read: “Alhamdulillah, she is fine… thank you for your messages.” Their post helped put an end to the growing speculation.
Boufal’s mother has become a beloved figure among fans of Morocco’s national team since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where her emotional celebrations with her son on the pitch went viral worldwide.
The heartfelt scenes came to symbolize the deep bond between Moroccan players and their mothers, adding a human dimension to the team’s historic run at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
