Suicide car bomb targets Libyan army brigade headquarters in Bani Walid – The North Africa Post

A suicide car bomb struck the headquarters of Libya’s 444th Combat Brigade in Bani Walid, about 170 kilometres southeast of Tripoli, the unit confirmed on Tuesday, September 3.

The attacker detonated the vehicle at the entrance of the compound, but the brigade said the situation was quickly brought under control and operations are continuing. Photos released by the brigade showed the damage caused by the blast.

The 444th Combat Brigade operates under the UN-recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli and is one of the most active units in western Libya. The attack highlights the country’s ongoing instability more than a decade after the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi.

Libya remains divided between the GNU in Tripoli and an eastern administration allied with commander Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army.
