British firm launches major copper drilling program in Agadir – The North Africa Post

Critical Mineral Resources PLC, listed on the London Stock Exchange, has initiated a 6,000-meter diamond drilling program at its Agadir Melloul copper-silver project in Morocco’s western Anti-Atlas region. The campaign aims to confirm potential resources of 150,000 to 200,000 tons of contained copper at an average projected grade of 1.2 percent.

The first-phase operation involves HQ-core drilling distributed between a local contractor and equipment being shipped from western Canada. CMR targets defining sufficient resources to support initial mining operations of 750 to 1,000 tons per day while establishing foundations for a world-class deposit. Fifty drilling platforms stand ready, benefiting from favorable topography and existing road infrastructure.

Chief Executive Charlie Long emphasized the program’s significance, stating it represents “an essential step in building a resource and fundamental value for shareholders.” The work will examine stratigraphy, petrology, and metallurgy to better understand deposit geometry and grades. Expected mineralized intersections should range between 2.0 and 2.5 meters, with some potentially exceeding 5 meters across approximately four-square kilometers.

Development cost advantages stem from favorable geological conditions. The formations’ gentle dip allows vertical drilling at limited depths, reducing expenses compared to similar projects elsewhere. This geological advantage positions Agadir Melloul among the region’s most competitive sedimentary copper projects.

The drilling program reflects broader industry trends toward securing critical mineral supplies outside traditional jurisdictions. Morocco’s stable investment climate, established mining regulations, and strategic location between Europe and Africa enhance its attractiveness for mineral exploration companies.

CMR’s systematic approach includes comprehensive geological studies alongside drilling activities. The company expects initial results to guide expanded exploration phases, potentially confirming Agadir Melloul’s status as a significant copper resource supporting Morocco’s mining sector diversification beyond phosphates and emerging precious metals discoveries.
