Rabat – Morocco’s city of Taghazout, 273 kilometers away from Marrakech, has become the talk of the town not only among travelers, but also among giants like National Geographic.
The global cultural magazine featured Taghazout, a destination that attracts locals and international tourists alike year-round.
“Taghazout has long attracted free spirits, surfers, and backpackers thanks to its bohemian vibe,” National Geographic wrote, citing the proximity between the beach town and red-washed Marrakech.
Just a three-hour drive from Marrakech, the city has historically attracted celebrities like Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, who fled “cold winter to found inspiration” along Taghazout’s caramel-colored sand and sun-drenched shores, said National Geographic.
The magazine also recalled the national tourism roadmap seen in Taghazout. It stated that this plan seeks to turn Taghazout Bay into a preeminent “sustainable seaside resort destination.”
National Geographic also offered readers a variety of activities for tourists in the region, including surfing.
Like Essaouira, Taghazout also attracts wave enthusiasts. For National Geographic, the region is considered the capital of surfing and yoga culture.
“Surfing is an absolute requisite here, and it is suitable for surfers of all skill sets, from Anchor Point Bay to Devils Rock and Banana Beach,” the magazine said.
Beyond shopping, Nat Geo recommended visiting a hammam, or bath house, describing it as a “way of life” in Morocco.
It also recommended exploring oases like the Paradise Valley, which is a 40-minute adventure from Taghazout.
“When you get there, limestone cliffs, palm tree-filled gorges, and emerald colored rock pools make this natural off-the-beaten-path oasis worth the trek it takes to get there,” the magazine wrote.
The area, according to the magazine, is not only an ideal place for hiking, but also for horseback riding, soaking in the natural beauty of the desert, as well as swimming.
“You’ll want to pack plenty of water and sturdy walking shoes,” the magazine recommended, advising tourists to also book a tour that includes an Amazigh lunch with a family at a local farm.
Taghazout has been featured in various international magazine websites, which have long been ranked among the top travel destinations.
In 2021, Forbes named Taghazout as the best place to travel in 2022.
