Rabat – Spanish authorities arrested a 17-year-old Moroccan on Sunday, suspected of raping a 14-year-old girl near a migrant minors’ center in the city.
According to converging Spanish media, the incident, which occurred late Friday night, has intensified scrutiny of Spain’s policies on migrant minors. Neighbors alerted police after hearing the girl’s cries.
The suspect, who lived at the Madrid facility for unaccompanied minors, a center with a history of serious incidents, led the girl to a nearby park.
Police found her in shock, with her clothing removed and clear signs of rape.
Authorities said the minor attempted to flee and resisted arrest by attacking officers. He was restrained and taken first to the family and women’s reception unit, then transferred to a juvenile detention facility.
The Spanish police launched a full investigation and will decide whether the suspect will face pretrial detention in a secure center for minors.
The case triggered strong reactions from opposition parties, who blamed Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government for the rise in unaccompanied migrant minors arriving in Spain under precarious conditions.
Some also noted the government’s unclear migration policy, holding it responsible for gaps in safety and oversight.
