A powerful explosion struck the Skeerat area near Misrata’s industrial zone, about 200 kilometres east of Tripoli, on Sunday, August 31, local media reported.
The cause of the blast has not yet been confirmed, but witnesses said burning shells and shrapnel fell over nearby residential areas, forcing evacuations.
Security forces quickly sealed off access roads as ambulances and civil defence teams responded to the scene. According to Mohamed Al-Nihoum, spokesperson for Misrata Medical Center, six people sustained minor to moderate injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Both the National Safety Authority and Misrata Medical Center declared a state of emergency as authorities worked to contain the situation and assess the full extent of the damage.
