Marrakech – Morocco’s Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, called on international film producers and actors to discover Morocco as a premier filming destination during his address at the Venice Production Bridge event on Friday.
The minister showcased the country’s diverse geography, cultural richness, and developed infrastructure that position it as a global platform for the film industry.
Speaking at the Venice International Film Festival, Bensaid pointed to the strong cultural and artistic ties between Morocco and Italy, noting both countries’ long traditions in cinema.
During his visit, the minister held meetings with festival director Alberto Barbera and production bridge president Pascal Diot to present Morocco’s recent cinema sector reforms and incentives supporting cultural and film industries.
The 82nd Venice International Film Festival, running from August 27 to September 6, has given special attention to Morocco alongside Chile and the United Kingdom during its Venice Production Bridge market events.
This recognition confirms Morocco’s prestigious position as a land of cinema and creativity.
Morocco, boasting the often-called “Hollywood of Africa” in Ouarzazate, is a cinematic powerhouse where sweeping deserts, ancient kasbahs, and state-of-the-art studios converge, offering filmmakers world-class crews, generous incentives, and unrivaled backdrops.
For international producers, the North African kingdom offers a complete filming package, including a 30% cash rebate administered by the Moroccan Cinematographic Center (CCM).
The incentive requires a minimum local spend of MAD 10 million ($1 million) and 18 shooting days, with clear permitting timelines published by the CCM.
The country boasts experienced film crews and diverse locations from desert to coastline, centered around Ouarzazate’s Atlas Studios, one of the world’s largest film facilities.
Major productions filmed in Morocco include Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II,” the James Bond film “Spectre,” “John Wick: Chapter 3” in Essaouira, and “The Bourne Ultimatum” in Tangier.
Morocco’s film industry continues to grow, with forecasts exceeding MAD 2 billion ($200 million) in foreign production investments for 2025.
The country’s spotlight as a Venice Production Bridge focus nation this year signals that Morocco’s incentives, infrastructure, and political support are aligned to welcome international productions.
