U.S. Bechtel firm interested in Morocco’s airports modernization projects – The North Africa Post

Bechtel, a leading U.S. construction and engineering firm, is interested in the investment opportunities offered in Morocco’s airports modernization projects as the country braces for co-hosting the FIFA World Cup 2030 along with Spain and Portugal.

According to Africa intelligence news platform, the American company hopes to secure a contract for the modernization of the Kingdom’s airports.

Morocco has unveiled a $4.2 billion airports strategy aimed at upgrading and expanding key airports over the next five years and doubling annual passenger capacity from 38 million to 80 million passengers by 2030.

In 2024, Morocco recorded 17.4 million tourist arrivals, a 20% increase over the previous year, and is targeting 26 million visitors by the end of the decade.
A significant portion of the funding is allocated to the expansion and modernization of Marrakech-Menara, Agadir-Al Massira, Tangier-Ibn Battouta, and Fès Saïss airports.

Morocco is also planning the expansion of several regional airports and the construction of new airport near Casablanca to accommodate up to 40 million travelers and connect the country to long-haul destinations.

The North African Kingdom is working to establish itself as a major global and regional aviation hub. Given the growing importance of aviation to Morocco’s economy, the Moroccan airports strategy 2030 is expected to have a far-reaching and positive impact on the Kingdom’s economic and social development.

To keep pace with the airports’ expansion and renovation, Morocco’s national airline company, Royal Air Maroc, will increase its fleet from 56 to 200 planes by 2037, with a mid-term goal of having 107 aircraft by 2030.
