Three Nations Unite to Host African Championship

The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) is set to make history as the first continental edition co-hosted by three countries.

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are jointly welcoming teams from across Africa for the tournament, which runs from August 2-30.

The championship features players who compete in African national leagues, bringing together homegrown talent from across the continent. Five major stadiums spread across four host cities will stage the matches.

    Tanzania opens the tournament

Tanzania’s capital, Dar Es Salaam, is scheduled to host the opening ceremony at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.

The massive venue seats 60,000 spectators, making it the largest stadium in the tournament, bringing fans today to watch Tanzania face Burkina Faso in the opening match.

    Kenya hosts the final

The tournament will conclude in spectacular fashion at Kenya’s Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, north of Nairobi.

This 60,000-capacity stadium will host the final on August 30, where two teams will battle for the continental crown.

Nairobi also features the Nyayo National Stadium, which holds approximately 45,000 people. This venue will stage several group stage matches, including games from Group A.

Group A includes Morocco, Kenya, Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

    Uganda takes the third-place match

Uganda’s capital, Kampala, will host the third-place playoff at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium on August 29.

The stadium can accommodate 45,000 fans and will also stage Group C matches throughout the tournament.

    Zanzibar welcomes defending champions

The smallest venue, Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, seats 15,000 spectators but will host some of the tournament’s most exciting matches.

Group D games will take place here, featuring defending champions Senegal alongside Nigeria and Guinea.

The three-nation partnership represents a new approach to hosting major African tournaments, spreading the economic and logistical benefits across multiple countries while reflecting the region’s noticeably improving football infrastructure and passion for the beautiful game.
