Kiir Urges Lifting of Sanctions to Bolster South Sudan’s Fragile Peace Process – The North Africa Post

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has appealed for the immediate lifting of international sanctions and a United Nations arms embargo, citing their detrimental impact on the country’s progress and security sector reform. Addressing lawmakers at the opening of the Revitalized Transitional National Legislative Assembly in Juba on Wednesday, July 16, Kiir emphasised that South Sudan’s foreign policy is anchored in peaceful coexistence and mutual respect. He asserted that external restrictions, in place since the 2013 civil conflict and reinforced in 2018, have hindered efforts to build lasting stability.
Kiir also used the platform to call on all signatories of the 2018 revitalised peace agreement to recommit to the accord unconditionally, warning that the current fragility of the peace process requires renewed dedication. He extended an olive branch to hold-out opposition groups, encouraging them to join the national dialogue and contribute to reconciliation and unity. In a notable policy stance, he advocated for the immediate integration of pro-peace opposition forces into a single, unified national army to fortify internal security.
Underlining the government’s central priorities, Kiir reiterated his administration’s commitment to peace, national cohesion, and long-term development. His appeal comes at a critical juncture for South Sudan, as it prepares for democratic transitions amid persistent political divisions and economic hardship. The lifting of sanctions, he argued, is essential for enabling security reforms and fulfilling the promises of the revitalised peace agreement.
