On Monday, July 14, 2024, Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has renewed calls for reparations from nations historically responsible for the trans-Atlantic slave trade and colonisation of Africa, underscoring the urgent need to restore the continent’s full human dignity. Speaking in his capacity as the African Union’s Champion for Reparatory Justice, Mahama delivered a progress report at the AU’s seventh Mid-Year Coordination Meeting held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. He described Africa’s call for reparative justice as a collective demand rooted in historical truth and moral responsibility.
Mahama stressed that the global community must stand with Africa in its pursuit of a more just and equitable world. In a statement shared on his official platforms, he declared, “Africa’s demand for reparative justice is no longer a mere murmur,” highlighting its transformation into a unified and resolute campaign for dignity. He further urged international actors to recognise and respond to Africa’s call, aligning development with identity and justice.
