Tangier Hosts Workshop on WEFE Nexus Initiative at Oued El Makhazine Dam

    ayaJuly 17, 2026

Tangier hosted the second consultation workshop on Wednesday to present the interim findings of the feasibility study for the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE Nexus) initiative at Oued El Makhazine Dam. The event was organized by the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Regional Council in partnership with the Regional Directorate of Environment and the Global Water Partnership–Mediterranean (GWP-Med).

The initiative is part of the MedProgramme, implemented under the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Environment Programme, and aims to prepare a pilot project eligible for financing from the Green Climate Fund. The proposed project combines a photovoltaic solar power plant with precision agriculture solutions to promote sustainable resource management.

Speaking at the opening session, Regional Council Vice-President Rafiq Belqarchi reaffirmed the region’s commitment to adopting an integrated approach linking water, energy, food, and ecosystems as a driver of sustainable territorial development. Rabii Khamlichi, Director General of Services at the Regional Council, emphasized the need for integrated governance, strategic planning, and stronger cooperation among stakeholders.

The workshop also reviewed the preliminary feasibility study results and discussed technical aspects related to photovoltaic energy, precision agriculture, and governance mechanisms, with the participation of government representatives, public institutions, financial organizations, and technical experts.
