Tangier Welcomes 300 Sailors from 73 Countries for the Optimist World Championship 2026

    ayaJune 17, 2026

Tangier is set to host the 2026 Optimist World Championship, organized by the Royal Moroccan Sailing Federation in partnership with the Royal Yacht Club of Tangier and under the supervision of the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA), from June 18 to June 28.

The international competition is expected to bring together around 300 sailors aged between 12 and 16, representing 73 countries. The championship is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious youth sailing events on the global sporting calendar.

Speaking during a press conference in Tangier, Royal Moroccan Sailing Federation President Ahmed Bennani Zohouane said the event reflects the confidence placed in Morocco by international sports organizations and supports the country’s efforts to strengthen its position as a host of major international sporting events.

Many competitors have already begun training sessions in Tangier Bay ahead of the official races, while the championship village has been established at Tanger Marina Bay. Organizers expect around 1,500 attendees, including athletes, coaches, family members and visitors.

Beyond its sporting dimension, the championship aims to promote values such as discipline, teamwork and fair competition among young participants, while showcasing Tangier’s tourism, cultural and maritime assets to an international audience.
