Italy Chooses Tangier to Launch Celebrations of the 80th Anniversary of the Italian Republic in Morocco

    ayaJune 3, 2026

Italy has selected Tangier as the starting point for the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic in Morocco, a decision carrying both symbolic and strategic significance that reflects the growing status of the city within the Mediterranean region.

The first event took place aboard the Italian Navy frigate Virginio Fasan, attended by Italy’s Ambassador to Morocco, Pasquale Salzano, along with senior Italian military and diplomatic officials.

Speaking on the occasion, the ambassador emphasized that the anniversary serves as an opportunity to reflect on the values upon which the modern Italian Republic was founded, particularly freedom, democracy, and service to the public good. He also praised the role of the Italian Navy in representing and promoting these values across international waters.

The choice of Tangier as the first venue for the celebrations was far from accidental. The city has become one of the Mediterranean’s most dynamic urban centers thanks to its strategic location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, near the Strait of Gibraltar, one of the world’s most important maritime routes.

Over the past years, Tangier has also emerged as a major economic and logistics hub, driven by large-scale development projects, most notably the port complex of Tanger Med and the industrial and logistics ecosystem surrounding it. This has strengthened the city’s role as a gateway linking Europe, Africa, and global markets.

The selection of Tangier to launch these official celebrations also reflects the city’s growing importance among international partners as a platform for cooperation, dialogue, and interaction between Europe and Africa.

The celebrations will continue over the coming days in Casablanca, Marrakesh, and Rabat, before concluding on June 8 with a concert titled “Two Shores, One Voice,” celebrating the friendship and cooperation between Morocco and Italy.

The event once again demonstrates that Tangier is no longer merely a transit city between the two shores of the Mediterranean, but has evolved into a regional player attracting increasing international attention and hosting major diplomatic, economic, and cultural events.
