Weak demand hits Morocco’s livestock markets ahead of Eid al-Adha

    ayaApril 29, 2026

With one month remaining before Eid al-Adha in Morocco, livestock markets are experiencing weak demand for sheep purchases, amid cautious consumer behavior and differing views among breeders and traders.

Industry sources indicate that supply is abundant this year in terms of both quantity and variety, yet demand remains limited so far, leading to slower activity in weekly markets and sales points.

Breeders note that the recent agricultural season helped improve the condition of livestock compared to previous years, although this improvement has not yet translated into increased purchasing activity.

They also report maintaining prices or slightly reducing them in an effort to stimulate sales, but without a significant rise in demand.

However, professionals expect a surge in purchases during the final weeks before the holiday, as many households traditionally delay buying until the last moment.

In urban areas, families often postpone purchases due to logistical challenges related to keeping and caring for the animal at home.

As a result, some consumers are turning to alternatives, such as buying from farms while leaving the animal with the breeder until just before the holiday, or relying on slaughterhouse services.

Overall, price trends are expected to depend largely on the final days before Eid al-Adha, which are considered decisive in shaping market dynamics based on supply and demand.
