Moroccan markets have recently witnessed a new increase in onion prices, with the cost per kilogram ranging between 5 and 8 dirhams last Sunday, levels that have raised concerns among consumers, particularly in light of current economic conditions and the approaching Eid al-Adha.
According to professionals in the vegetable sector, this increase is attributed to the end of the local production season and the introduction of a new variety known as “Khodariya,” which has affected the balance between supply and demand in the markets.
In this context, several consumers have expressed concerns about a continued upward trend in prices in the coming period, especially with the expected rise in demand ahead of the holiday, which may place additional pressure on household purchasing power.
A sector professional noted that onion prices had decreased during the previous Ramadan, ranging between 10.5 and 12 dirhams per kilogram for high-quality produce, while imported onions from France, the Netherlands, and Egypt were priced between 7.5 and 8 dirhams, adding that the current increase is mainly due to higher demand, limited supply, and the impact of recent weather fluctuations, including rainfall and cold temperatures, on production quality and yield, which has led to increased reliance on imports to meet market needs.
