When is World Malaria Day and what is it?

    ayaApril 25, 2026

The international community marks April 25 as World Malaria Day, a global health awareness occasion aimed at raising attention to the risks of malaria and strengthening worldwide efforts to prevent and control the disease, which continues to affect millions of people, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.

Established by the World Health Organization, this day seeks to highlight progress made in combating malaria and to encourage increased investment in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, including the distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets and improved healthcare services in high-risk areas.

Malaria is a parasitic disease transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, causing symptoms such as fever, headache, and fatigue, and potentially leading to severe complications if not treated promptly.

Global health data indicate that malaria remains a major public health challenge in several countries, particularly in Africa, where the highest number of cases and deaths are recorded, prompting health authorities to strengthen prevention and early detection programs.

This day also serves as an opportunity to renew international commitment to eliminating malaria through scientific research, vaccine development, and improved access to treatment.
