Switzerland stated on Friday that Morocco’s autonomy initiative represents the most serious, credible, and pragmatic basis for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, according to a joint statement.
This position was expressed in a document signed by Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita during a working visit in Bern.
The statement also noted that Switzerland welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, considering that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be among the most viable solutions.
Switzerland further reaffirmed its support for the role of the United Nations and the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy.
This statement comes within the context of ongoing international positions regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue.
