Rabat – The US Embassy in Rabat announced on Wednesday that Ambassador Duke Buchan was officially sworn in yesterday as the United States Ambassador to Morocco.

“He looks forward to arriving in Rabat soon to advance and strengthen the longstanding partnership between the United States and Morocco,” the embassy said in a statement.

The US Senate confirmed the new ambassador’s appointment earlier this month. Buchan’s swearing-in marks the final step before he takes up his post in Rabat, where he is expected to arrive in the coming days.

His appointment comes as both countries continue to strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade, security, renewable energy, and education. Morocco is one of the United States’ oldest allies, with diplomatic relations dating back to 1786, the oldest unbroken treaty in US history.

In recent years, Washington and Rabat have increasingly worked closely on regional stability and development projects in Africa.

    Who is Duke Buchan?

Born in 1963, Richard Duke Buchan III is a businessman, diplomat, and philanthropist from North Carolina. He previously served as US Ambassador to Spain and Andorra between 2017 and 2021.

Buchan studied economics and Spanish at the University of North Carolina and later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. He founded Hunter Global Investors, an investment firm based in New York.

During his Senate confirmation earlier this month, Buchan described Morocco as “a pillar of stability,” arguing that the country’s strategic location “makes it critical to American national security.”

He also expressed his commitment to deepening economic and security ties and to advancing cooperation on global issues.

The new ambassador committed himself to strengthening the “long-standing security relationship” between Washington and Rabat as they “confront common challenges.”
