After FIFA, the World Bank sets up regional HQ in Morocco – The North Africa Post

Rabat, Morocco’s capital city, will host the new regional headquarters of the World Bank, according to local press report. The move strengthens the Kingdom’s economic attractiveness and position as a gateway to African markets.

Morocco has gained the trust of the World football governing body for hosting FIFA Africa Office. The World bank followed suit, confirming the country’s status as an international reliable and strategic partner.

The opening of a new WB regional HQ in Morocco will enhance further the Kingdom’s nation branding and soft-power. The WB Rabat Office will serve as the regional center for the Bank’s operations in the Maghreb region, including Morocco and Malta. It will be tasked with coordination in development projects, know-how sharing, and partnerships in areas like economic growth, social protection, climate resilience, and infrastructure.

This aligns with the World Bank’s Country Partnership Framework for Morocco (extended to 2025), which focuses on job creation, reducing disparities, and supporting Morocco’s ambitions to become a regional connectivity hub.

Marrakesh hosted the 2023 World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings. Morocco has also received significant funding (e.g. $250 million for social protection reforms and $350 million for urban mobility in Casablanca).
