Rabat — A tragic road accident killed nine people on Saturday near Douar Taaouniat El Haouch Ouahed, in the province of Sidi Kacem, 134 kilometers from Rabat.
Additionally, six people were seriously injured during the road accident that took place at 6 p.m. following a collision between a truck and a large vehicle carrying 15 people.
Local authorities, along with the Royal Gendarmerie and civil protection service, have arrived at the scene to take the necessary measures, local authorities said.
The injured were transported to the provincial hospital center of Sidi Kacem, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the morgue of the same hospital.
An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Road accidents killed 23 people and injured 2,067 between September 1-7.
According to Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security, the accidents were mainly due to drivers’ inattention and failure to give priority to pedestrians.
Security services drew up 43,593 contraventions and 6,405 reports submitted to the public prosecutor’s office.
In September, Morocco’s government approved a draft law aimed at increasing compensation for victims of traffic accidents caused by motor vehicles.
The draft law amendment primarily increases compensation amounts by progressively raising the reference minimum wage by 64%. This ensures a significant improvement in compensation level, government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said in a post-government council briefing.
