Valencia Sue Netflix over Vinicius Jr Film

Valencia have filed a lawsuit against Netflix and Conspiracao Films, accusing them of defaming the club’s supporters in the documentary Baila, Vini, centred on Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr.

According to SPORT, the Spanish club claims the series “damages the honour” of its fans and has demanded both financial compensation and a public correction – neither of which have been issued so far.

The dispute stems from the fiery La Liga clash between Valencia and Real Madrid at Mestalla on 21 May 2023, when Vinicius Jr. reported racist abuse from sections of the crowd. In the aftermath, Carlo Ancelotti said “the entire stadium” had chanted “monkey” at the Brazilian.

Valencia maintain that fans were shouting “fool” instead – not “monkey” – and argue that the documentary’s use of TikTok footage subtitled with the racial slur is “manipulated and false.”

The club insists the edit unfairly tarnishes its supporters’ image and is calling for the subtitles to be corrected. It also notes that three individuals identified for racist abuse were swiftly prosecuted, receiving eight-month prison sentences and two-year stadium bans.

Valencia are urging the court to compel Netflix to include these facts in any revised version of the documentary.
