Rabat — Morocco appeared in a list of countries that will benefit from the US Defense Department award of a new $27 million contract modification to General Dynamics Land Systems Inc. on Thursday for Abrams tank technical support.
The deal includes Morocco among several allied countries that will benefit from the expanded program.
The Pentagon announcement identified eight countries that will receive support under this fiscal 2025 Foreign Military Sales (FMS) funds: Australia, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Morocco, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwan.
This latest modification brings the total value of contract W56HZV-22-C-0012 to $1.062 billion. General Dynamics will perform the work in Michigan, with completion scheduled for February 27, 2027.
The Pentagon originally signed this contract in 2022 to provide maintenance, development, and technical support for Abrams tanks used by both US forces and allied nations, including Morocco.
The program covers electronic system upgrades, new technology design, and deployment of field experts.
The Defense Department budget and the FMS mechanism fund the program together.
Contract modifications show growing military cooperation between Washington and its partners. The Pentagon made six changes to the contract in 2023 and four modifications in 2024, demonstrating continuous expansion of the support program.
The Abrams tank remains the US’ military strategy and alliance-building cornerstone. This technical support contract is set to ensure allied nations can maintain and upgrade their Abrams fleets effectively while strengthening defense partnerships globally, according to a statement from the US Department of War.
The fund will be beneficial in boosting Morocco’s military arsenal with the most advanced technical Abram tanks.
Morocco’s military cooperation with the US has steadily deepened over the past decade, reflecting Rabat’s strategic push to modernize its armed forces and reinforce its position as a key security partner in North Africa.
Recent multi-million-dollar deals reflect this growing partnership, with Washington approving high-value contracts to enhance Morocco’s air defense, ground combat capabilities, and logistical infrastructure.
Beyond arms purchases, cooperation extends to joint training exercises and defense industry partnerships. Morocco hosts the annual African Lion military drills, the largest US-led exercise on the continent, which brings together thousands of troops from allied nations.
Meanwhile, US defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin have expanded their footprint in Morocco, engaging in technology transfer and local defense manufacturing initiatives.
