Malaysia Celebrates 68th Independence Day in Rabat Reinforcing Ties with Morocco

Mohmmedia – The Embassy of Malaysia in Rabat hosted a diplomatic reception yesterday to mark Malaysia’s 68 years of independence. Attendees included a distinguished audience of  ministers, government officials, and diplomatic representatives.

The event affirmed Malaysia’s commitment to its ties with Morocco and offered a space for diplomatic engagement.

The reception is one of many national day events held by Malaysian embassies around the world. It commemorates Malaysia’s independence and helps engage with foreign partners.

Earlier in August, six Southeast Asian embassies in Morocco organized the first Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Bazaar and Cultural Festival in Rabat to celebrate the 58th ASEAN Day. Malaysia was one of the embassies involved in the event.

It brought cultural exchange to the Moroccan public and showed how ASEAN nations are deepening their presence in the country.

During that festival, Malaysia’s Ambassador to Morocco, Dato Shahabudeen Adam Shah, spoke to Morocco World News about Morocco’s new role as an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner since 2023.

“We are proud to be here and we are proud to be having very close cordial bilateral relations with the Kingdom of Morocco,” he said.

He explained that there are many areas for cooperation between Morocco and ASEAN.

“We are really looking forward to further enhance our cooperation not only bilaterally between Malaysia and Morocco but also between ASEAN and Morocco in the future,” the ambassador said, expressing hope that relations will continue to grow both bilaterally and between Morocco and the wider Southeast Asian region.

Morocco became the first African country to obtain ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner status in 2023. This allows it to take part in ASEAN meetings in certain sectors and creates opportunities for collaboration in trade, education, tourism, and investment.

Together, the September National Day reception and the ASEAN cultural festival in August show the growing strength of Malaysia-Morocco relations.

As Malaysia looked back on nearly seven decades of independence, the reception in Rabat also functioned as a diplomatic signal that Malaysia intends to deepen and extend its partnership with Morocco, anchored not just in shared values but in practical cooperation across multiple fronts.
