US Congressman Wilson Renews Support for Moroccan Sovereignty

Meknes — US Congressman Joe Wilson reaffirmed his country’s commitment to Moroccan autonomy over the Western Sahara in remarks following a UN General Assembly meeting on Tuesday.

Wilson stressed the historic ties between the US and Morocco while characterizing Polisario’s regional opposition as Iranian-backed interference.

Speaking after reinforcing his position at the UN, Wilson referred to the deep-rooted relationship between the two nations, saying: “Morocco was the very first country that recognized the American independence of the American Revolution.”

He noted that “for 250 years, there’s been a relationship that’s really unique and very positive” between the two countries.

The South Carolina Republican called for unified support of Moroccan territorial integrity, stating: “We need to back up full unity within the country of Morocco.”

Wilson argued that regional divisions should be eliminated, declaring that Western Sahara “should be a single country” under Moroccan control.

The congressman framed the issue in terms of broader security concerns, stressing the importance of Moroccan stability “to American security, but to the security of the people of Morocco.”

Wilson described his recent visits to Morocco as “inspiring,” hailing the positive outlook of the Moroccan people.

As for the Polisario, the Algerian-backed movement that has contested Moroccan rightful sovereignty over Western Sahara since the 1970s, Wilson characterized it as “another proxy of Iran that they’re trying to create in North Africa.”

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly, Wilson said: “In fact, the Polisario is a terrorist organization and I have introduced a bill to recognize it as such, because the existence of these terrorist groups contributes to destabilizing the world.”

While his statements back Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, the congressman’s assertion also aligns with broader US concerns about Iranian regional influence.

Wilson concluded his remarks by reiterating US solidarity with Morocco, saying: “We love Morocco and the people of the Kingdom of Morocco.”
