Rabat- The National Association of Media and Publishers (ANME) expressed serious concerns on Thursday over the growing presence of social media influencers and podcasters presenting themselves as journalists.
The association warned that these individuals are encroaching on professional media and competing for resources without any legal authorization.
driss Chahtane, re-elected today to lead ANME for a new term, stressed the urgent need for legislation to address this phenomenon.
He particularly criticized the rise of so-called “room-and-hotel journalism,” which he said undermines the credibility of the profession. Highlighting the Morocco vs. Niger match as a recent example, Chahtane condemned the serious misconduct of certain influencers, accusing some parties of exploiting them for personal gain.
Chahtane added that strict laws will soon be issued alongside the appointment of officials in the National Press Council, who will be tasked with monitoring and taking action against individuals impersonating journalists or acting as intermediaries.
He also singled out podcast creators, affirming that ANME will take firm action to ensure that journalism adheres to its established rules and legal framework. He concluded with a warning: “Anyone engaging in such practices will be held accountable under the law.”
The upcoming National Press Council law, Chahtane noted, will be complemented by additional legal measures to tackle unauthorized practices and protect the integrity of Moroccan journalism.
During the general assembly, ANME also unanimously approved its financial and activity reports and reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of media professionals. Chahtane announced plans to submit a memorandum to the government calling for increased public support for national media outlets.
Improving working conditions for journalists, particularly in sports media, was a key priority for ANME. Proposed measures include discounted train travel and a forthcoming partnership with Royal Air Maroc to provide a 50% discount on flights for accredited journalists.
Following the assembly, ANME will appoint a new executive board to oversee the continued implementation of its programs and initiatives.
In a related development, the National Professional Football League (LNFP) and ANME signed a partnership agreement in Casablanca on Tuesday. Under the agreement, ANME will coordinate with editorial directors to deploy journalists accredited by the National Press Council, ensuring professional and comprehensive coverage of sports events at local, regional, and national levels.
The agreement also assigns ANME responsibility for organizing journalist workflows, managing post-match press conferences, controlling field access, and coordinating with photographers, while the LNFP will oversee overall event logistics.
