The European Union representative Office in Tripoli announced the start of a new initiative aimed at strengthening the protection of World Heritage Sites and promoting cultural tourism in Libya, as part of international collaborative efforts to protect the country’s cultural heritage.

The initiative was unveiled at the historic site of Leptis Magna Tuesday, during an official meeting attended by European Union representatives, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and the Tourism Police of the Government of National Unity.

According to the European Union Delegation, the initiative will help preserve the integrity of the country’s archaeological sites by assessing challenges and risks they encountered. It will also ensure the development of required infrastructure to accommodate increasing numbers of visitors in the future.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the European Union Delegation explained that protecting cultural heritage is not only about safeguarding the past, but also serves as a cornerstone for making the future better for next generations through sustainable tourism and reinforcing national identity and belonging.
