Libya and Malta have agreed to begin discussions on maritime borders, with the possibility of expanding the talks into multilateral negotiations if they involve third countries.

The agreement was reached during a meeting on Wednesday, September 10, in Valletta between Libya’s Acting Foreign Minister, Al-Taher Al-Baour, and his Maltese counterpart, Ian Borg.

The talks also covered bilateral cooperation in areas such as border management, coast guard coordination, and joint efforts to tackle illegal migration, alongside development initiatives to address its root causes.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to closer political consultations and cooperation on regional and international issues, including the war in Ukraine and developments in the Middle East. Malta highlighted its plan to recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly session, while both countries pledged to support Libya’s peaceful political process and pursue consensual solutions to enhance stability and bilateral ties.
