The World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF have announced the mobilization of $65 million under the Joint Resilience Project Phase II to support nearly one million vulnerable people in South Sudan.
The initiative will cover urban and peri-urban communities in Juba, Torit, Yambio, and Aweil, focusing on critical areas such as food security, education, healthcare, clean water, sanitation, and protection services. With an estimated 70 percent of the population—9.3 million people—requiring humanitarian assistance, UNICEF’s representative Noala Skinner described the support as transformative, enabling expanded treatment for severe malnutrition, improved access to essential services, and strengthened child protection.
WFP’s acting country director, Adham Effendi, underscored that the funding goes beyond short-term aid, framing it as an investment in resilience, human dignity, and long-term development. The funds will also support education infrastructure through classroom renovations and daily school meals, which the agencies highlighted as vital for both health and human capital development.
Building on progress from the first phase, the project seeks to consolidate gains while extending its reach, providing a more sustainable path for communities grappling with prolonged crises in the country.
