US Congress Members Reaffirm Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara

Rabat – A delegation of US Congress members visiting Rabat on Friday reaffirmed the United States’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and expressed hopes for stronger American investment in the region.

Following talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita, Congressman Mike Lawler spoke of the importance of deepening cooperation between the two countries, especially in the southern provinces.

Washington remains committed to recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, he said, reiterating American support for the 2007 Moroccan autonomy plan as the most “serious and credible” path to resolve the dispute.

Lawler also encouraged more American investments in the Sahara, stressing that economic development would further strengthen the historic partnership between Morocco and the United States. He recalled that Morocco was the first country to recognize US independence in 1777, a sign of the long-standing ties between the two nations.

Congressman Ritchie Torres commended the friendship and strategic partnership between Morocco and the US, noting that Morocco is the best friend of the United States in North Africa.

Torres also welcomed the fact that Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara has been reaffirmed by successive administrations, most recently by President Donald Trump.

Growing momentum for Sahara Morocco’s position

Morocco’s stance on the Sahara continues to gain momentum internationally. The US decision in December 2020 to officially recognize Morocco’s sovereignty, first announced under President Trump, remains a cornerstone of American policy in the region. Reiterations of this recognition by members of Congress and by Trump himself in recent months have further reinforced Rabat’s position.

Thank you to Minister Bourita for sitting down with me to discuss regional security, the long-standing relationship between Morocco and the U.S. and the importance of advancing the Western Sahara autonomy plan. https://t.co/b23l0KYtgL

Meanwhile, the Polisario Front finds itself increasingly isolated on the international stage. As support from major global powers grows for Morocco’s autonomy plan, with stronger calls for investment in the southern provinces, the separatist movement is facing dwindling backing.

The continued support from the United States and other allies, like France and Spain, strengthens Morocco’s territorial integrity while boosting its role as a key partner for peace, security, and economic development in the region.
