Polisario Fumes Following Morocco-Mauritania Military Meeting Over Sahara Map Display

Rabat — Morocco’s political wins seem to be annoying the separatist Polisario front, as it has sharply criticized the display of the North African country’s full map, including its southern provinces, during an official meeting between a Moroccan military delegation and Mauritanian army officials in Nouakchott.

Separatist media outlets have condemned what they see as Mauritania’s “alignment” with Rabat’s position on the Sahara issue.

According to converging reports, they have warned Nouakchott against “any recognition, explicit or implicit, of Moroccan sovereignty.”

The outlets cautioned that “any support, even symbolic, could alter regional balances and strengthen Morocco’s diplomatic position on the international stage.”

These reactions followed a visit by Rear Admiral Khalil Bechri, deputy to the inspector general of the Royal Armed Forces in charge of communication, to the Communication and Public Relations Directorate of the Mauritanian army’s general staff.

Colonel Sidi Mohammed Hadid received the delegation and discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation in institutional communication, public relations, and expertise sharing.

The visit included signing a minutes document, exchanging gifts and commemorative photos, and the Moroccan delegation signing the guest book.

These standard protocol procedures were enough to trigger the Polisario, which seeks to maintain the Sahara file in a logic of diplomatic and media escalation.

The meeting represents routine military cooperation between neighboring countries, but the Polisario Front views any display of Morocco’s territorial claims as a threat to their separatist agenda.

The separatist movement, backed by Algeria, continues to oppose Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region through diplomatic pressure and media campaigns.

Morocco considers the southern provinces an integral part of its territory and has maintained this position in international forums and bilateral meetings.

The North African country has continued to reap the fruits of its diplomacy in recent years, with a growing number of international major powers, including the US, France, and Spain, now endorsing its Autonomy Plan as the best route to a lasting settlement to the lingering dispute.

The Polisario’s reaction reflects the ongoing activities surrounding the Western Sahara dispute and the separatist organization’s sensitivity to any perceived diplomatic gains by Morocco in the region.
