Over 606,000 Moroccans received Schengen visas in 2024- Minister – The North Africa Post

The European Union issued more than 606,000 visas to Moroccan citizens in 2024, marking a significant increase and reflecting a notable improvement in diplomatic relations between Morocco and its European partners, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said.

In a written response to a parliamentary question regarding visa reciprocity, Bourita emphasized that Morocco’s approach to visa policy is guided by a comprehensive strategy rooted in balanced interests, cooperation agreements, and mutual respect.

“The relationship with Europe has seen tangible progress,” Bourita stated, citing the visa issuance figures as evidence.

He noted that France alone granted approximately 284,000 visas, a 17% increase from the previous year, making Morocco the top recipient of French visas in the region.

The minister highlighted that the visa rejection rate for Moroccan applicants stood at around 20%, which he described as “a moderate rate compared to other countries.”

Bourita reaffirmed that visa policy is a sovereign right for every nation, including Morocco, and decisions regarding visa requirements or exemptions are based on three key factors: reciprocity, political and economic priorities, and the broader context of bilateral relations.

He also pointed to Morocco’s adoption of modern electronic visa systems as part of its strategy to enhance openness while maintaining national sovereignty. These systems, he said, reflect Morocco’s commitment to digitizing public services and improving accessibility.

The ministry continues to engage with foreign diplomatic missions and consular centers operating in Morocco, urging them to address systemic issues in visa processing and to prevent exploitation by unauthorized intermediaries, he said, stressing the importance of timely and respectful communication with Moroccan applicants, especially in cases involving urgent humanitarian needs such as medical treatment or education.

He also noted that the Moroccan passport has climbed in global rankings, now among the top 70 passports worldwide, which he said reflects growing international trust in Morocco and its institutions.

Concluding his remarks, Bourita reiterated that Morocco’s visa policy is part of a national strategy that balances sovereignty with openness, and aims to protect the dignity and interests of Moroccan citizens abroad.
